I am often annoyed and astounded by the amount of grammatical errors in modern names and general text. Almost everywhere you go you can see apostrophes ( ' ) missing. Sometimes you'll even find commars ( , ) missing, which is actually quite appalling to me. To be quite honest, if they're not using the right punctuation, then they obviously didn't listen in their Literacy classes, did they?
But there's no point in rambling on and on (I could go on for ever) on how bad modern grammer is. Let me show you how grammar should actually be used. First, I'd like to start with the piece of punctuation that is missed out or misused so many times: the apostrophe ( ' ).
First of all, what is an apostrophe used for? Well, say for example you wanted to explain that something belonged, or was posessed by, another object, animal or person, or even saying that more than one object belongs to that single object, animal or person. The other use of apostrophes is shortening certain pairs of words, like "it is" and "she is". But let's start with the first example.
Without the use of an apostrophe, you would have to write some tedious sentance like, "I picked up the coat that belonged to Peter" if you wanted to say that something actually belonged, or was posessed by, another object/animal/person. I'm sure that you'll agree with me when I say that saying "that belonged to" is incredibly long. Well, that's when Apostrophe Man saves the day!.. By using an apostrophe, and using it correctly, you can get rid of that awfully long sentance. Here's how it works. After the object/animal/person's name (in our case, Peter) you would put an apostrophe ( ' ). Then you can get rid of the "the" and "that belonged to". So now you will have, "I picked up coat Peter's." Just swap around the object (the coat, in our case) and with the object/animal/person. Your final result is; "I picked up Peter's coat." So there you have it - a first lesson with apostrophes, using them to show how an object belongs to another object/animal/person. Pretty cool, right?
